Poker Note: Suited junk is still junk

After seeing Dave win a $170 pot in a $3-6 game with K6 suited, I thought about the value of hands like these. Although the value of the K6h went way up on the flop (there was a king on the flop, and the Ace of hearts, and the huge pot made Dave's calling of a ton of reraises the best thing to do-- he caught runner-runner heart for the nut flush), PRE-FLOP these hands are garbage. Holding 2 suited cards pre-flop, you will end up hitting your flush by the river only 6% of the time. With the exception of suited aces, the vast majority of the time these hands are unprofitable. And even if you do hit your suit, someone else might be holding the Ace for the nut.

So play your suited aces, and your suited connectors, but don't call a pre-flop raise with suited junk unless you are in the blinds.

But then again, I wasn't the one who raked the $170 pot!
